About
Carlos Velasco-Forero is a Senior Research Scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne. His research has particular focus on estimation and forecast of rainfall in real-time using weather radars and rain gauges, statistical analysis of the structure of rainfall, and developing operational systems to generate ensembles of rainfall forecasts for hydrology (for example the new radar rainfall nowcasts in the Bureau Apps)
Carlos has also over 15-year experience as a hydrologist with experience in scientific and applied research, delivering operational flood forecasting and warning services and managing hydrometric field networks. He is experienced in leading food forecasting teams as lead flood forecaster and Regional Hydrology Manager.
Carlos holds a PhD in Civil Engineering (Hydrology) from The Technical University of Catalonia (Barcelona) (2009), a Master of Water Resources Management (2002) and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (1999) from the National University of Colombia.
Carlos was born in Colombia, one of the rainiest countries on earth.
