In planning

Evacuation is a critical risk mitigation to protect and preserve life in contexts where there is residual risk. This research will develop a national roadmap for evacuation modelling design and development through a series of workshops to identify research gaps and consolidate learnings to improve evacuation decisions and support tools.

A project briefing video has been recorded to provide further information. Watch the recording below.

Project details

This project concept was proposed by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action Victoria.

Emergency managers use evacuation to protect the community by removing them from areas threatened by natural hazards to locations of safety. This project will provide a comprehensive understanding of evacuation modelling across a spectrum of spatial and temporal contexts, with the potential to identify new applications across prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. Research will leverage investment, resources and data across agencies and states to further enhance evacuation model development.

The project aim is to conduct a series of workshops with emergency personnel, land-use and transport planners, researchers, software developers and decision makers to:

  • identify user needs and research gaps for improving evacuation decision support tools
  • develop a nationally agreed and prioritised roadmap for developing Evacuation Simulation Decision Support Tool/s (ESDT)
  • provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential us of evacuation modelling across different contexts while developing stronger partnerships and collaborations between emergency services, land-use and transport planners, researchers and software developers.
