Four new projects are proposed for further development at Natural Hazards Research Australia, based off concepts submitted in August 2023 by the Centre’s network of Participants.
The projects were approved by the Centre’s Board in June, with this process ensuring that the Centre funds research that will strengthen natural hazard resilience and disaster risk reduction across Australia, based directly on Participant organisational needs.
The following projects are at different stages of development and finalisation, with some to have an open Expression of Interest for research teams to be released in the next few months:
- Conserving and reconnecting floodplains to mitigate flood risk addresses key knowledge gaps that will improve the implementation of nature-based flood risk mitigation strategies. The project will improve understanding for the value of conserving and reconnection floodplains as a risk mitigation, supporting land-use, and urban planning, increasing biodiversity ad improving community wellbeing.
- Australian temporary and emergency accommodation: learnings to inform future policy, strategy and recovery operations will analyse and address the increasing challenges in emergency and temporary housing during and after a disaster. The project aims to provide national guidance on the design and implementation of temporary housing from the research and resources developed.
- Multi-hazard evacuation modelling for effective emergency management: A collaborative workshop series will develop a national roadmap for evacuation modelling design and development through a series of workshops to identify research gaps and consolidate learnings to improve evacuation decisions and support tools.
- Support integration of Recovery Capitals in service plans for communities with different levels of social disruption is a utilisation project that will develop research previously undertaken at the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC. The project aims to utilise previously developed frameworks in community social disruption to understand the extent of exposure to disaster-driven social disruptions and Recovery Capital-related support needs of communities.
