Sumayyah Ahmad is a PhD Candidate at Curtin University. Her research investigates how social media platforms facilitate spontaneous volunteers to participate in recovery and response efforts before, during and after a disaster. Important theoretical contribution includes the development of foundational knowledge about the different types of spontaneous volunteers and uncovering how community led disaster recovery and response takes place through hybrid collective groups facilitated by social media.
