Fire case studies

Project type

Core research

Project status

In progress

This project will systematise and consolidate existing fire case study methodology to enable quicker results in future, with potential benefits including response to official enquiries. The project will deliver two case studies of the New South Wales Lake Conjola/Currowan fire (2019) and Wooroloo fire in Western Australia (2021) to explore the meteorological conditions that led to extreme fire behaviour.

The project will be undertaken in partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology, NSW Rural Fire Service, Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA and the Country Fire Authority.

Project details

This project will deliver two case studies of the New South Wales Lake Conjola/Currowan fire and Wooroloo fire in Western Australia to explore the meteorological conditions that led to extreme fire behaviour. This detailed analysis, which isn’t possible in real time during a bushfire, will identify learnings to enable fire agencies to prepare and respond to future bushfires, as well as improve future study methodologies. They will also deliver learnings to the communities affected and identify inputs to development of science-based policy.

Through the conduction of these two case studies, the project team will also deliver a design framework detailing optimal case study delivery methodology and will design and develop a streamlined model-run and data visualisation process for Australia's high-resolution ACCESS (and ACCESS-Fire) numerical weather prediction model.
