This research is investigating how well immersive and interactive media technologies can help people understand hazards, and whether these tools could realistically be used to raise awareness in Australian communities.

Project details

Extreme weather events have been increasing globally since the 1970s, and climate change is expected to make many hazards more frequent and more damaging, which is why improving public awareness and engagement is a top national priority in Australia. Research shows that people find visual evidence the most effective way to understand and prepare for hazards, and new immersive and interactive technologies, such as virtual and extended reality, offer promising tools for strengthening hazard awareness in communities.

This research is investigating how well immersive and interactive media technologies can help people understand hazards, and whether these tools could realistically be used to raise awareness in Australian communities.

This fellowship is designed to establish new collaborations with national and international centres and scholars who specialise in hazard communication.
