More than 100 Participants, researchers and stakeholders recently met with Natural Hazards Research Australia’s (the Centre) Board and staff in Melbourne on 31 January to discuss the challenges faced by the sector, the communities we serve and the natural hazards research needed to meet these challenges.
The program included an overview of Centre achievements from Board Chair, Iain MacKenzie and update on our direction and research from CEO, Andrew Gissing.
Victoria’s Chief Fire Officer, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Chris Hardman set the scene of the natural hazards landscape, while Craig Savage, Head of Strategic Projects and Network Price Review, CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy spoke on behalf of Energy Networks Australia (ENA) about the future of energy infrastructure and natural hazards resilience.
Lead Centre researcher and Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre alumnus, Dr Mika Peace, Fire Science Meteorologist, Bureau of Meteorology presented her thoughts on the state of bushfire science and its application in emergency management decision making, taking questions from the audience.
The formal program ended with an open discussion between attendees and the Centre’s Board and staff challenges facing the sector, enhancing natural hazards resilience and disaster risk reduction within Participant organisations and how the Centre could help address some of those needs.
