Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre) is committed to collaborating closely with its partners to create research that is useful, useable and used. One of the core values of the Centre is trust and collaboration – to share and work cooperatively in a trusting environment.
Over the next few months, the Centre’s Node Research Managers will be collaborating with sector partners to develop project briefs for nine new research projects:
- Awareness, education and warning programs for cascading and compounding natural hazards
- Improving predictions and warnings for flash flooding
- Protecting homes from bushfire
- Decision-making in emergency management
- Bushfire risk at the rural–urban interface
- Severe weather impact prediction
- Modelling the impacts of cascading and compounding natural hazards on built environment
- Robust temporary building repairs
- Mitigating natural hazard impacts in urban environments
These projects were identified for inclusion in the Centre’s 2022 research program based on sector engagement while developing the soon-to-be-released National Research Priorities and the 10-Year Research Strategy. You can read more about this process here.
As the nine projects above have already been selected for funding, small working groups are now being established to develop project briefs for each project. These project briefs will be used to inform research teams what is required for each project.
The working groups will involve people that:
- have a keen interest in and detailed knowledge of, research needs in the relevant area and how that research can best be used in the sector
- are available to participate in a 1.5-hour online workshop and provide written feedback on a draft project brief.
Working group members will need to commit to:
- consulting within their organisation and networks on key research needs and outcomes
- actively participating in the 1.5-hour online workshop to provide initial input to the project brief
- collaboratively reviewing a draft project brief in a Microsoft Teams group.
The date and time of each workshop will be determined in consultation with the relevant working group.
If this sounds like you and you have availability through May and June to participate, please contact your relevant Node Research Manager by 22 April to register your interest:
- Nicola Moore, nicola.moore@naturalhazards.com.au - Qld and NT
- Dr Kat Haynes, kat.haynes@naturalhazards.com.au - NSW, ACT and SA
- Dr Blythe McLennan, blythe.mclennan@naturalhazards.com.au - Vic, Tas and WA
Please note that the Centre’s preference is for one working group member per organisation, per project.
In the future, the Centre will put out calls for new project ideas to our partners twice a year, with new projects to be approved in approximately October and April. Further information about how to propose project ideas will be available in coming weeks.
For researchers
While we are not seeking researcher input to these project briefs, we will be inviting Expressions of Interest from research teams for most of these projects over coming months. To ensure that you hear about new research opportunities at the Centre, please subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media.
This is an important step in developing the Centre’s research program and an opportunity to work closely with our partners on these and future research opportunities.
