A new round of concepts that will be developed into future research projects funded by Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre) is open.

The current round has opened 28 July 2025 and closes 5:00pm (AEST) 5 September 2025.

This follows the Centre’s updated bi-annual concept submission process which streamlines and targets the process and future project funnel for Participants, researchers and end-users.

The concept submission forms and dates are available on the Submitting a project idea page

Find a previously recorded online briefing covering the submission process, assessment prioritisation and high-priority research areas and frequently asked questions.

For this current concept submission round, the following areas are identified as high priority research areas:

  • Understanding and mitigating risk of flood, earthquake, heatwave, coastal inundation, tsunami, cyclone and severe storm (inclusive of associated hazards)
  • Social equity, including vulnerabilities that impede people and communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural hazards
  • Environmental solutions including an understanding of how we can improve environmental resilience and the efficacy of environmental solutions to reduce natural hazard risk
  • Land use planning and urban design, including building materials, as critical future natural hazard risk reduction activities
  • First Nations knowledge
  • Future workforce

Concepts from these areas are highly encouraged to ensure the Centre is responding to knowledge needs identified in the Centre’s updated  Biennial Research Plan  2025-27. Research concepts outside of these areas are also accepted.
