A new research project, now open for EOI, will help the emergency management sector understand compound disasters and how they impact community vulnerability and resilience.
Whether the threat is from the same or different compound disasters, individuals, communities and businesses are expected to be prepared for and respond appropriately to the hazard confronting them. Given these challenges, how can emergency management organisations best engage with communities and ensure important public information is coordinated and consistent?
Part of Natural Hazards Research Australia's core program, the new Awareness, education and communications for compound natural hazard events project aims to define and identify the nature of compound disasters, their characteristics, and how a greater frequency of natural hazard events may alter vulnerability and exposure. It seeks to better understand the:
- responses of communities facing multiple threats simultaneously and/or sequentially
- implications and opportunities for engaging with communities regarding compound disasters to enhance resilience.
Outcomes will include the co-design and development of a community engagement framework, including a series of better-practice principles to engage with communities in the context of minimising multi-variate risk and addressing the complexity of compound disasters.
Expressions of Interest are open until 11:59pm AEDT on 6 December 2022. EOIs must be prepared using the Centre's EOI submission form. Find out more about this EOI, including the submission form and any frequently asked questions, on the Awareness, education and communications for compound natural hazard events project page.
