New approaches to the bushfire and climate challenge at global conference in Melbourne

Release date

3 June 2022

The latest knowledge on bushfires and climate will be on show next week at the Fire & Climate 2022 Conference in Melbourne.

Hosted by the International Association of Wildland Fire from 6-10 June at the Pullman Albert Park, the conference will be one of the first big in person conferences for the emergency management sector in Australia in several years.

Speakers from around the country, as well as international experts, will share the latest science and practice on the big issues we all face in dealing with bushfires under climate change.

Fire & Climate 2022 has plenty of depth, with eight keynote presentations from leaders in the science and operations of fire and climate, plus expert panels on Indigenous and cultural burning in Australia and North America and on fire science communications. This is complemented by almost 100 research and practice presentations from subject matter experts.

Speakers include:

  • Dr Sophie Lewis, ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment
  • Joe Buffone, Director-General, Emergency Management Australia
  • Vicki Woodburn, Group Executive, Australian Climate Service
  • Dr Amy Christianson, Parks Canada
  • Dr Amber Soja, National Institute of Aerospace US
  • Greg Mullins, the Climate Council
  • Dr Sidney Dekker, Griffith University
  • Stephen Oliver, Manager Documentaries, ABC

Key topics throughout the week include climate change and fire, extreme bushfire behaviour, cultural land management, fire and the environment, community safety, bushfire risk and bushfires of the future.

Fire & Climate 2022 is at the Pullman Melbourne, Albert Park, from 6-10 June and complements the same conference held in Pasadena, United States, 27-27 May. Complimentary media passes are available.
