A new national forum of natural hazards research will take place in Brisbane, 12–14 October, hosted by Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre).
The Natural Hazards Research Forum is the inaugural annual forum from the Centre, bringing together people from research, government, industry and community to share knowledge about natural hazards research.
It will be held in person at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre in Queensland and includes a three-day program of engaging discussions, knowledge sharing and road-mapping of natural hazards research through the Centre and across Australia – what it is, what’s being done now, how it can be used and what should be done in future. Anyone interested in contributing to these conversations is encouraged to attend.
The CEO of Natural Hazards Research Australia, Andrew Gissing, said the conference was an important early initiative of the Centre.
“The Centre has identified a need to bring together a broad but inter-connected sector to actively engage in knowledge sharing and discussion about research across major natural hazards themes, with a particular emphasis on research that is used, useful and usable,” Andrew said.
“The Natural Hazards Research Forum will do all of this and more. It brings together research, government, industry and community to share knowledge and learn about the current state of natural hazards research in Australia.”
The Natural Hazards Research Forum will formally launch the Centre and its research programs, and will also feature natural hazard research and operational experts from other organisations to contribute to discussions about Australia’s research needs and future.
In acknowledgement of the United Nations’ International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (13 October), the program will also:
- include targeted discussions about the latest natural hazard research in Australia, including discussions about future research needs, innovation and use of applied research for risk reduction and resilience
- feature the Disaster Challenge Final, where the three finalist teams will present their solutions to the wicked problem of ‘engaging a transient sector of the community with disaster preparation information’
- draw on many important research strategies and priorities, including the Centre’s recently published Biennial Research Plan and national Research Priorities.
This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to come together to share, discuss and plan for the future of natural hazards research across the country. It is also a great chance for postgraduates to meet expert researchers and industry representatives, to share their knowledge and new research ideas.
Registrations are now open, closing at 11:59pm on 7 October. Register now to secure your spot and contribute to the conversation about natural hazards research in Australia.
