
Each year the Natural Hazards Research Forum brings together people from research, government, industry and community to share research knowledge about disaster risk reduction towards safer, more resilient and sustainable communities. This year the Forum returns to Adelaide on 18-20 June 2025 at the National Wine Centre. The Early and Mid-Career Academic and Practitioner Network Executive Committee are excited to invite you to participate in a full day specifically for early and mid-career academics and practitioners immediately before this year’s Forum, on 17 June. As part of this year’s Forum activities, on the pre-Forum day, the EMCAP Executive Committee have created an interactive and engaging day to enable knowledge sharing, connection and conversations about research, practice and career paths. The purpose is to address key career development questions:
- Professional development in research
- What is the future of natural hazards research?
- How can I make utilisation much more than it is?
- What are the mindsets that we have that perpetuate the problems and the successes?
- Common issues across business and academia
- Includes a briefing from Natural Hazards Research Australia on ecosystem overview
- We will work on the question, “am I a good employee in this sector?”
The program for the day has been designed based on feedback from the survey sent to EMCAP members, many thanks for your suggestions:
- 11am – 12pm: Networking session
- 12pm – 1pm: Lunch
- 1pm – 3pm: Workshop part 1 – Communication, from grants to pitching and collaboration
- 3:30pm – 5pm: Workshop Part 2 – Positive futures for EMCAPs and the natural hazards sector
The day promises to have the following benefits for attendees:
- Hear about the realities of how academia works, and how practitioners work
- Opportunity to find out the rules of procured research (sitting alongside the world of grant funding)
- Opportunity to contribute to future directions of the Network
