International panel to advise on research

A new panel of international science experts will help to guide Natural Hazards Research Australia into the future.

The International Research Advisory Panel is now established and will provide advice to the Research and Implementation Committee on the quality and progress of the Centre’s research program and Biennial Research Plan. This will help improve research quality through providing an international perspective on research trends, collaboration opportunities, as well as professional and research development opportunities.

The Panel has representatives from the global research community with expertise relevant to the physical, social and political sciences that reflect the Centre’s research program. Members of the Panel have knowledge and experience relevant to natural hazards and disaster risk reduction.

Chaired by Centre Chief Science Officer Prof Deborah Bunker, the Panel is comprised of the following Members:

  • Dr Amy Cardinal Christianson, Fire Social Scientist, Northern Forestry Centre (Canada, First Nations)
  • Prof Roland De Marco, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Fiji National University (Fiji)
  • Dr Mark Finney, Research Forester, Rocky Mountain Research Station, US Department of Agriculture Forest Service (United States of America)
  • A/Prof Susanna Jenkins, Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore)
  • Prof Jessica Lamond, FET - Architecture and the Built Environment, University of the West of England (United Kingdom)
  • Dr Sarah McCaffrey, Research Forester, Rocky Mountain Research Station, US Department of Agriculture Forest Service (United States of America)
  • Dr Richard Smith, Manager Research Strategy and Science Investment, Earthquake Commission (New Zealand)
  • Prof Thomas Wilson, Chief Science Advisor, National Emergency Management Agency, Professor of Disaster Risk and Resilience, University of Canterbury (New Zealand)

The International Research Advisory Panel supports the Centre Board alongside three other sub-committees, each with a focused purpose to strengthen the decisions of the Board.
