EOI open to improve access to Victorian bushfire reconstruction data

Research theme

Situational awareness

Release date

17 August 2022

A new project for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Victoria is now open for Expressions of Interest.

The objective of the Victorian bushfire reconstruction data project is to improve access to the data required for bushfire reconstructions in Victoria. Much of the data required is stored within fire and land management agencies’ systems; however, it is often in different formats and not always linked to the fire being reconstructed.

The lack of complete and accessible retrospective bushfire event information is a recognised gap within the Victorian bushfire management sector, obstructing several actions required for fire and land management agencies to commit to a thorough adaptive management approach to bushfire risk management.

This project will identify data flow and consistency issues within and across Victorian fire and land management agencies relating to data required for bushfire reconstructions, make recommendations on best practices for managing bushfire reconstruction information and develop templates for storing fire incident information.

Where this research fits

This project will be conducted specifically for DELWP and does not form part of Natural Hazards Research Australia’s nationally funded core projects. This partnership between Natural Hazards Research Australia and DELWP builds on commissioned research conducted for DELWP by both the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC and the Bushfire CRC.

This project will develop a detailed data analysis on Victorian bushfire reconstruction data that will feed into the national bushfire information database being developed through the Centre’s core research program.

Submitting a proposal

Project teams responding to this call for Expressions of Interest are required to submit their response that includes a project proposal of up to eight pages that clearly addresses the requirements of the specifications set out in the EOI. More details can be found in the below PDF.

EOI proposals are due by 11:59pm 30 August to research@naturalhazards.com.au. Successful applicants will be notified by 20 September.
