More than 100 attendees tuned in to the first Hazardous Webinar on 18 July for a highly engaging session on community-led recovery.

Showcasing the findings from the Natural Hazards Research Australia Community-led recovery: evidence, dimensions and supports for Community Recovery Committees project, the webinar highlighted the self-assessment tool and the online social network mapping tool that have been developed to help Community Recovery Committees form, plan and identify the help they need.

Researchers Dr Colin Gallagher and Hannah Morris (University of Melbourne) presented the findings and were joined by Melanie Bloor from Resilient Uki in northern New South Wales. As a community participant in the research, Melanie shared her firsthand experience of the research and the usefulness of the tools it has developed.

The webinar concluded with an engaging question and answer session – so popular that there were more questions than time allowed. To help address these extra questions, Melanie, Hannah and Colin have provided written answers which can be found on the webinar page.

Watch the webinar below to gain key insights on the findings from this research, along with what comes next. You can also download the presentation from the webinar page.

This research has provided guidance and tools to Community Recovery Committees, building on previous research conducted after the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires. The project explored four case studies in four different states across regional, urban, interface and remote communities who had experienced either a flood or bushfire, along with surveying disaster recovery workers.

It is improving coordination between agencies and groups working in recovery after a disaster, helping Community Recovery Committees understand how they are positioned within their community and assisting agencies to better understand the role, dynamics and challenges facing Community Recovery Committees.

August’s Hazardous Webinar will be on community risk assessment on 15 August at 12pm AEST. Register now to join Dr Nader Naderpajouh (University of Sydney) and Sara Morgan (NSW SES) as they showcase the findings and implications from this research, which has reviewed the current risk assessment processes, challenges and needs across the emergency services sector, as well as insights from other sectors, to inform a new multi-hazard risk assessment process for the NSW SES.
