March Hazardous Webinar - Resilient housing policies: A framework for evaluation

The March Hazardous Webinar was a fascinating look at global post-disaster resilience housing programs and what they mean for Australia.

Prof Paula Jarzabkowski led a discussion on post-disaster resilient housing programs from around the world, including how these initiatives function within their own social and environmental contexts to impact resilience at individual and community levels.

Speakers:

  • Prof Paula Jarzabkowski (University of Queensland and Natural Hazards Research Australia)
  • Dr Katie Meissner (University of Queensland and Natural Hazards Research Australia)
  • Vina Varsani (Queensland Reconstruction Authority)
  • Dan Kilpatrick (Queensland Reconstruction Authority)
  • Sam Bowstead (Department of Housing and Public Works)

Post-disaster resilient housing programs have been adopted on the basis that investing in resilience measures in the home can significantly reduce the effort, cost and time to recover from disasters.

This webinar was the first in a series of ongoing research titled Evaluating the Resilient Homes Fund. The Resilient Homes Fund was established to provide Queenslanders whose homes were damaged by floods access to grants to raise, retrofit or have their home voluntarily bought back. The research seeks to understand success factors and lessons learnt as they link to physical, financial, social, and emotional resilience for individuals and communities.
