Dr Melissa Teo is a researcher and educator in disaster management and circular economy in the Faculty of Engineering, QUT. She specialises in community engagement in disaster resilience particularly focusing on vulnerable population groups. Her research explores the different dimensions of vulnerability using social network analysis and place-based approaches to empower and build resilient communities. Recently, she was part of a QUT-led DFAT funded grant on flood resilience, and the findings of the research has practical and policy implications on how governments understand and conceptualise vulnerability at the local level. Her work guides strategic decision making on community-based initiatives to empower vulnerable population groups in disasters, particular flooding.
